Southwest President Laftagareen visits frontlines in Bay region ahead of anti-Al-Shabaab offensive

    Baidoa (HOL) — Southwest regional state President Abdiasis Hassan Mohamed Laftagareen visited frontline troops in the Bay region on Sunday to assess military readiness ahead of expanded operations against the militant group Al-Shabaab.

    During his inspection tour, President Laftagareen commended the forces for their commitment to defending the country and reaffirmed his administration’s support for efforts to stabilize the region.

    “There is no retreat, and you have the full support of the government and the people,” said President Laftagareen. “We will soon defeat the Khawarij.”

    The visit comes as large-scale offensives are ongoing in the Bay and Bakool regions, where Somali government forces, supported by Southwest Dervish units, are targeting Al-Shabaab strongholds.

    Last month, Somali National Army and Southwest forces killed approximately 20 Al-Shabaab fighters — including both foreign and Somali commanders — in the Barujed area near Deynunay, according to regional authorities.

    The federal and state governments have intensified joint military campaigns across southern Somalia in recent months, aiming to dislodge the group from rural territories and restore civilian governance.
