Hargeisa authorities ban carrying of small arms to curb knife violence

Monday March 17, 2025

Hargeisa (HOL) – Authorities in Hargeisa have banned the carrying of small arms, including knives and machetes, across all districts of the Somaliland capital in response to a recent surge in knife-related violence.

The decision, announced by the Hargeisa Security Committee on Sunday, follows the stabbing deaths of two individuals in the Mohamed Mooge district.

“We have agreed that knives, machetes, and similar weapons are prohibited in every district in the capital. Anyone caught carrying them will be liable to face the law,” Ahmed Mohamed Adaad, Governor of the Maroodi Jeex region, said.

Officials also warned that individuals who use weapons to harm others will not be released but will be held accountable and brought to justice.

In addition to restricting weapons, the security committee announced that only registered football teams affiliated with the Ministry of Youth and Sports will be permitted to organize as groups in the city.

“We warn all youths who are creating unrest, chaos, and disorder. They will be considered criminals and will be brought to justice,” Adaad added.

The crackdown comes amid rising knife-related attacks in Hargeisa and Gabiley, with at least four people, including a police officer, killed in recent months. Several others have been injured in similar incidents, prompting authorities to take action to curb the violence.
