Somali forces destroy makeshift Al-Shabaab bridge in Middle Shabelle airstrike

Sunday March 9, 2025

Mogadishu (HOL) — Somali security forces and its international partners have destroyed a makeshift bridge used by Al-Shabaab militants in the Middle Shabelle region.

The Somali National Intelligence and Security Agency (NISA) confirmed the airstrike targeted the bridge in Aw-baalle, a village known to be a transit point for Al-Shabaab fighters and weapons. According to NISA, the bridge was recently built by the militants to facilitate movement and evade security forces conducting operations in the region.

The operation also took out military vehicles that Al-Shabaab had planned to transport across the bridge, further hindering the group’s ability to reinforce fighters in the area. NISA reported that several Al-Shabaab operatives, including commanders, were killed in the strike.

In recent months, Somali forces, backed by local militias and international partners, have escalated military campaigns against the militant group, targeting strongholds and cutting off supply routes. The Middle Shabelle region has been a focal point of these operations, as Al-Shabaab has used its vast rural areas to regroup and launch attacks.

“NISA and the Somali National Army have successfully blocked all major supply routes that the Khawarij had been using, leaving their remnants trapped in remote areas,” the agency stated.

Authorities say they remain committed to intensifying counterterrorism operations to dismantle Al-Shabaab’s operational networks. “The latest operation has delivered a significant blow to the militants, and Somali security forces remain committed to conducting further operations to eliminate the threat,” the statement added.

Somali officials have called for sustained military pressure to prevent Al-Shabaab from rebuilding its logistical network. The government has also urged international allies to continue supporting security operations as Somalia pushes to stabilize its regions and reclaim territory from the insurgents.

Al-Shabaab, an al-Qaida-linked extremist group, has waged a violent insurgency against Somalia’s central government for more than a decade. Despite territorial losses, the militants continue to conduct suicide bombings, assassinations, and large-scale attacks in urban centers.
