Mogadishu (HOL) — Former Somali President Mohamed Abdullahi Farmaajo has called on the Federal Government to support Puntland’s recent military successes against ISIS, describing the region’s efforts as pivotal in Somalia’s fight to eradicate terrorism.
Last week, Puntland security forces launched a bold operation that neutralized 12 foreign ISIS militants. The militants, who initiated the attack with coordinated explosions targeting a military base, were swiftly defeated, showcasing Puntland’s preparedness and resolve in tackling extremist threats.
In a statement released Sunday, Farmaajo praised the operation, calling it a critical step in dismantling terrorist networks across Somalia. “This courageous operation by Puntland’s security forces is a critical step in cleansing our nation of extremists who threaten the safety of our people and hinder our progress,” he said.
Farmaajo also directed a strong message to the Federal Government, calling for its active involvement in Puntland’s counter-terrorism efforts. “This fight is not limited to one region; it is a national imperative. The Federal Government must stand with Puntland as they eliminate terrorist hideouts that endanger Somalia’s sovereignty and national identity,” he emphasized.
The former president also called on all Somalis to unite behind security forces and avoid internal divisions that could hinder progress. “We must set aside our differences and focus on the common goal of securing our country from the grip of terrorism,” Farmaajo said.
Puntland, a semi-autonomous region in northeastern Somalia, has been at the forefront of the country’s war on terror. Over the years, the region has carried out targeted operations against extremist groups, including Al-Shabaab and ISIS, which use Somalia’s rugged terrain to establish hideouts.
Somalia has faced decades of instability, with extremist groups such as Al-Shabaab and ISIS exploiting the lack of central governance to establish footholds. While Puntland has remained relatively stable compared to other regions, it has increasingly become a frontline in the fight against these groups.
Farmaajo concluded by commending Puntland’s leadership for its resilience and coordination in the fight against ISIS. He expressed confidence that such operations could set the stage for broader national efforts to secure Somalia.
“This is a victory not only for Puntland but for all Somalis. We must build on this momentum to ensure that no corner of our nation remains a haven for terrorists,” he said.
