Mogadishu (HOL) – Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud on Sunday called on citizens to unite in defense of the country’s sovereignty and territorial integrity following Israel’s recognition of the Somaliland region as an independent state.

Addressing the bicameral parliament in Mogadishu, President Mohamud described Israel’s move as “completely unacceptable” and a “clear attack on the nationhood, independence, and territorial integrity of the Federal Republic of Somalia.” He reaffirmed that the northern regions, known as Somaliland, are an integral part of Somalia and stressed that the government’s position will not change.

“The Somali government and people prioritize protecting our nationhood and unity. We must stand together to prevent threats to our existence as Somalis, as well as to regional stability and peace,” the President said.

President Mohamud also commended support from regional, Arab, African, and international partners in defending Somalia’s unity. He reiterated Somalia’s solidarity with the Palestinian people, condemning forced displacement and violations against them, and stressed that Somalia will not allow its territory to be used for wars or conflict.

The President called on friendly nations and international organizations to back Somalia’s diplomatic and legal efforts to safeguard the country’s independence, unity, and existence.

Israel’s recognition of Somaliland has been rejected by the Arab League, European Union, Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC), African Union (AU), and the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), all reaffirming their support for Somalia’s territorial integrity and sovereignty.
