Hargeisa (HOL) — Somaliland security forces released detained lawmaker Mohamed Abiib Yusuf on Monday, just hours after the Supreme Court ruled his arrest illegal and ordered his release from Mandera prison.
Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hussein Mirre Giirre, confirmed Abiib's release to the media, stating that the move followed the court's ruling.
The MP, who had been detained for 30 days, posted on his Facebook page: "I can confirm that I have regained my freedom. I thank everyone who sympathized with me during the 30 days I was illegally detained in Mandera prison."
Abiib's arrest had sparked widespread condemnation from the Speaker of the Somaliland House of Representatives and opposition parties, who labelled it a violation of the constitution.
He was arrested at Hargeisa's Egal Airport upon his return from the United Arab Emirates, facing accusations of treason, defaming the military, aiding the "enemy," and opposing national interests.
