Mogadishu (HOL) — Somalia is turning to Germany for assistance in transforming its immigration systems, a crucial step in the East African nation’s broader journey toward recovery and modernization. During a working visit to Berlin, Ahmed Said Mohamed, Director General of Somalia’s Immigration and Citizenship Agency (ICA), met with senior German officials to discuss training programs, visa facilitation, and developing advanced immigration technologies.

Germany has pledged support in training Somali immigration officers, focusing on capacity building and professional development. Mohamed also urged German authorities to simplify visa processes for Somali passport holders, describing it as vital for fostering stronger ties between the two nations and facilitating smoother travel for Somali citizens.

The ICA chief urged Germany to facilitate visa issuance for Somali passport holders, emphasizing that a streamlined process would foster stronger ties between the two nations by enabling smoother travel for Somali citizens.

The collaboration signals Somalia’s intent to align its immigration framework with international standards while addressing the challenges of managing migration in a post-conflict environment.

Somalia’s appeal to Germany comes as part of a broader effort to deepen bilateral relations. Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud and German Chancellor Olaf Scholz recently agreed to expedite the repatriation of undocumented Somali nationals, particularly those convicted of serious crimes. Of the estimated 65,000 Somali nationals residing in Germany, only a small number lack legal residency
