Former Halifax Wanderers midfielder Mohamed Omar now plies his trade in the USL Championship with San Antonio, but some of his upcoming games could see him feature on the national stage in Africa.

The former Canadian Premier League midfielder has accepted a call up with Somalia, potentially kickstarting Omar’s national team career at the age of 25.

The Toronto-born baller could make his Ocean Stars debut against Mozambique or Botswana. Somalia will play its group stage World Cup qualifiers against the two nations on June 7 and June 10 respectively.

Omar has made eight appearances for San Antonio since arriving this season, including a match against Monterey Bay that saw him suit up against former Wanderer Morey Doner.

A former MLS SuperDraft pick, Mohamed Omar had spent the previous two seasons in Wanderers blue, tallying 44 appearances and proving himself to be quite a midfield engine under both Stephen Hart and Patrice Gheisar.

His last season out east saw him named to an assistant captain role. He’s no stranger to leadership roles, having donned the captain’s armband for Notre Dame ahead of his SuperDraft selection by the Colorado Rapids.

His former side Halifax Wanderers are in the midst of a tough cold open to their sixth campaign, resting bottom of the table with one point on the board.
