Mogadishu (HOL) — Residents of Mogadishu started exhuming bodies from the Bulusia School cemetery in the Hamar Jajab district on Saturday, responding to an unexplained government directive to clear the site.
Among the exhumed was well-known comedian Abdi Muriidi Dheere (Ajakis), who passed away in September 2021. His family has relocated his remains to a more secure location to prevent future disturbances.
Participants in the exhumation said the government had not provided a reason for the order to vacate the cemetery, which contains the graves of several notable figures, including Abdirahman Omar Yarisow, the former mayor of Mogadishu who was killed alongside six government officials in July 2019 by an Al-Shabaab female suicide bomber.
