Somali cabinet ratifies MoU with Abu Dhabi Ports Group for maritime development

Thursday July 25, 2024

Mogadishu (HOL) - Somali Council of Ministers approved an audit of government agencies for the 2023 financial year during its weekly meeting, chaired by Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre, in Mogadishu on Thursday.

The Council discussed the report concerning the processes and procedures undertaken to ensure transparency and accountability within government institutions but did not share the report with independent media.

During the meeting, the Council ratified a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the Ministry of Fisheries and the Blue Economy and the Abu Dhabi Ports Group. This MoU is based on cooperation and development in Somalia’s maritime sector. However, specifics about the MoU were not provided.

The Council also addressed recent security concerns, particularly the recent seizure of weapons by residents in the Abudwak district in the Gedo region. This followed a clash between government forces, who were escorting two truckloads of weapons seized from illegal weapons traders, and local militia forces.

The Minister of State for the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change also presented a report on the recent inter-clan conflict in the Luuq district in the Gedo region. The central government, with support from the Jubbaland regional government, successfully brokered a ceasefire and initiated dialogue to resolve the conflict.

The Ministries of Internal Security and Defense highlighted ongoing government efforts to enhance national security and combat terrorist groups in Somalia.

The recent attack, in which over a hundred al-Shabab fighters were killed, occurred when al-Shabab militants attempted to overrun three army bases in the Lower Jubba region. The government forces repelled the attacks and safely detonated four car bombs around 80 km (50 miles) southwest of the port city of Kismayo in Jubbaland state.

The Council commended the Somali National Army for its recent achievements in eliminating terrorist threats and maintaining peace in various regions.
