Internal security minister arrives in Abudwaq to tackle smuggled weapons crisis

    Minister of Internal Security Abdullahi Sheikh Ismail Fartaag, accompanied by officials from the Federal Government and Galmudug State, arrives in Abudwaq to address the recent weapon seizures and regional security concerns.

    Abudwaq (HOL) — A delegation led by Somalia's Minister of Internal Security, Abdullahi Sheikh Ismail Fartaag, arrived in Abudwaq on Thursday to address the escalating security situation following the recent seizure of smuggled weapons by local militias.

    The delegation, which includes officials from both the Federal Government and the Galmudug State Government, is visiting Abudwaq to respond to the capture of a large cache of weapons by armed militias. These weapons, reportedly originating from Ethiopia, were intercepted by the militias in Shiil Madow, a locality under Abudwaq, following clashes between Galmudug security forces and armed militias.

    Puntland authorities have     warned of regional instability due to the smuggling of weapons, emphasizing the broader implications of arms trafficking. Meanwhile, officials from Somaliland have expressed concerns over the seizure of heavy weapons by civilians in central Somalia, fearing it could escalate violence and further destabilize the area​​​​.

    The Somali Federal Government has condemned the illegal importation and looting of weapons, stating that these arms were meant for illicit activities that could worsen the security situation​​. President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud convened a Security Council meeting to address the issue, underscoring the government's commitment to maintaining order and preventing further escalation​​.

    Some Somali lawmakers have praised Abudwaq residents for seizing the weapons, viewing it as a commendable act of community vigilance​​. Conversely, the Sade Clan Chief criticized the Federal Government's threats over the seized arms, advocating for a more cooperative approach to address underlying issues and maintain trust within the community​​.

    Minister Fartaag's delegation is expected to meet with local elders in Abudwaq to discuss the current situation and the dangers posed by the stolen weapons now in civilian hands.
