Saturday February 10, 2024

Garowe (HOL) - A military court in Puntland, a semi-autonomous region in Somalia, sentenced four men to ten years in prison on Saturday for their collaboration with the al-Shabaab militant group.

The convicted men, identified as Abdirisaq Mohamed Shire, Said Farah Abdiqadir, Farhan Weirah Lihad, and Abdiqani Ali Farah, were found guilty of transporting explosives for the al-Shabaab group.

Additionally, two women named Rahmo Weydow Abdi and Shamso Ali Isaaq were sentenced to five years in prison for their alleged collaboration with the convicted men.

The sentencing of these six individuals coincided with a recent surge in explosions in the coastal town of Bosaso, perpetrated by the al-Shabaab group. Security forces have been criticized for their perceived failure to address the insecurity in Bosaso city.

In a separate development last Thursday, security forces in Puntland apprehended two key foreign leaders of the Islamic State in the Bari region. Hassan Ibnu Mohamed Ibnu Hussein of Morocco and Mohamed Ibnu Mohamed Ahmed of Syria were captured during a precise operation in the Bohol area, underscoring the ongoing efforts to combat extremism in Somalia.
