Hargeisa (HOL) – The governor of Sanaag region, Ahmed Abdi Muse, announced on Monday that Somaliland forces are in complete control of Erigavo town following intense clashes with SSC-Khatumo forces.
Governor Muse revealed that the fighting occurred both within and outside the town, leading to Somaliland forces reportedly taking prisoners. He issued directives to the troops, warning against looting the homes of residents who fled during the violence and emphasizing strict measures against looters.
“The army has orders to take strict action against anyone looting houses,” said Muse. He also instructed the military to confiscate weapons from civilians seen carrying guns in the city. “If a civilian is seen in Erigavo carrying a gun, the military has clear orders to arrest him and seize his weapon.”
Muse dismissed claims of internal discord among residents, framing the conflict between the Somaliland administration and opponents of its rule. However, SSC-Khatumo has accused Somaliland of sparking the violence and targeting local populations.
The Federal Ministry of Interior, Federal Affairs, and Reconciliation has called for an immediate end to the hostilities in Erigavo and urged all parties to work toward stability and lasting peace in the Sanag region.
Erigavo remains a flashpoint for conflict, with frequent outbreaks of violence. In August 2024, clashes near the Goof settlement, 40 kilometres from Erigavo, left nine people dead, reportedly stemming from a revenge killing earlier in the city.
