EUCAP Somalia workshop aims to address barriers for women in fisheries

Thursday December 12, 2024

Mogadishu (HOL) — A two-day workshop organized by EUCAP Somalia and the Ministry of Fisheries and Blue Economy in Mogadishu aims to empower women in Somalia’s fisheries sector by addressing systemic barriers and fostering leadership opportunities. Held on December 9-10, 2024, the event drew participants from across the industry to discuss challenges and create pathways for sustainable development.

The workshop tackled key obstacles faced by women in the fisheries value chain, which spans aquaculture, processing, sales, and extraction. Despite playing a vital role, women often struggle with limited access to resources, training, and decision-making opportunities.

“This workshop is the beginning of a transformative journey for women in Somalia’s fisheries sector,” said Alberto Lopez-Asenjo, a fisheries expert with EUCAP Somalia. “By amplifying their voices and recognizing their contributions, we can unlock the full potential of this critical industry.”

Participants engaged in interactive sessions covering fisheries governance, business management, environmental policy design, and international legal frameworks. The event spotlighted strategies to enhance women’s visibility and leadership within Somalia’s maritime industries.

EUCAP Somalia, established in 2016, focuses on supporting Somalia’s maritime security sector, strengthening the rule of law, and enhancing police capacities.
