Beledweyne security crisis: Armed robberies escalate in Hiraan capital

Tuesday April 9, 2024

Beledweyne (HOL) - Residents of Baledweyne, the capital of Somalia's Hiraan region, are voicing strong concerns about the rising insecurity due to an uptick in criminal activities targeting civilians.

Locals report rampant robberies, noting, "Many of the perpetrators, armed with AK47 rifles, are clad in government army uniforms, instilling fear in the community." Residents say they mainly target mobile phones.

A significant incident occurred last night when armed robbers clashed with the local army in the Bundaweyn neighbourhood, known for its high crime rate. Witnesses described the encounter as "brief but intense."

In a separate event at the city's center, armed individuals in military attire raided a market. A business owner recounted, "They stormed the fair, firing shots and looting goods, creating chaos and fear among the people." He expressed frustration over the lack of effective response to the escalating crime, saying, "The situation is worsening, with no one in authority taking control, leading to a sense of lawlessness."

The sense of unease in Baledweyne is exacerbated by the ongoing power struggle between different factions from Hiran State and Hirshabeelle, further destabilizing the region and complicating efforts to establish security.
