Mogadishu (HOL) - Somali government announced that the al-Shabaab group leader responsible for financial affairs in the Bay region, along with several other officials, were killed during a military operation in southern Somalia on Wednesday.
In a brief statement, the Ministry of Defense revealed that the unidentified leader had been responsible for extorting money from various villages, including Adegabow Garar, Warta Dolar, Weley Bagal, and Ey-Duray, all of which are situated in the Bay region.
The ministry emphasized that this operation dealt a significant blow to the militants and vowed the operations would continue.
On the other hand, government forces, supported by international partners, killed ten al-Shabaab members during an operation targeting a meeting location of the militants. Military officials stated that the operation occurred in the Gumarka Cosobow Ali area within the Run-Nirgod district of the Middle Shabelle region.
Somalia’s government last year launched what the president called “total war” on al-Shabab, which controls parts of rural central and southern Somalia and makes millions of dollars through “taxation” of residents and extortion of businesses.
