Heavy fighting starts on the outskirts of Las Anod

    Las Anod (HOL) - Heavy fighting erupted between the Somaliland army and SSC-Khatumo forces once again in Las Anod town on Sunday morning, locals reported.

    The Somaliland government and SSC traditional elders have both accused each other of initiating the fighting. Somaliland claims that its troops were attacked by "Puntland-led allied" forces and that it was in a defensive position at the time of the alleged attack.

    A press statement issued by the traditional elders of Las Anod town claims that the Somaliland army carried out the attack and that they will defend themselves until the Somaliland army leaves the area of Sool, Sanaag, and Ayn.

    While the situation in the Sool region has been calm in the past few days, there have been a few skirmishes between the two sides, and clan militias have entered Las Anod town from Puntland for the last few days. In response, Somaliland has sent reinforcements to the Sool region.

    The chairman of the UCID party in Somaliland, Faysal Ali Warabe, stated on Friday that a ceasefire and dialogue are necessary to end the conflict in Las Anod. He added that the Somaliland army would not leave the territory claimed by the SSC.

    The Somaliland army has been battling with clan militias to gain control of Las Anod since December 28, 2022.
