Viorel Doroscan, 21, and Otniel Richardo Clejan, 21, appeared at Blanchardstown District Court on Friday charged with the murder of Mahamud Ilyas, 22, at an apartment at Verdamont in the West Dublin suburb on December 9.

Two men have appeared in court charged with the murder of a young man whose body was discovered wrapped in carpet on farmland.
Viorel Doroscan, 21, and Otniel Richardo Clejan, 21, appeared at Blanchardstown District Court charged with the murder of Mahamud Ilyas, 22, at an apartment at Verdamont in the West Dublin suburb on December 9. Mr llyas lived in the area with his family, who are originally from Somalia.
A dog walker discovered his lifeless body wrapped in carpet on December 10 in a field at Belgree, Kilbride, near Ashbourne, Co Meath. Sergeant Michael Redmond of Blanchardstown Garda station gave evidence that he arrested Doroscan, who is originally from Romania, on Thursday at 4.57pm under Section 10 (2) for the purpose of the charge of murder at an apartment at Verdamont in Blanchardstown on December 9.
At 5.24pm Sergeant Catriona White charged Doroscan, of Baymeadows, Hollystown, West Dublin, with the murder of Mr llyas. Sgt White handed him a true copy of the charge sheet. The court heard he replied “No Miss” after caution.
Doroscan did not address the court during the short hearing. Legal aid was granted after solicitor Brian Keenan told the court his client is not working and not in receipt of social welfare. Sergeant Emma Ryan gave evidence she arrested Otniel Richardo Clejan, of Verdamont, Blanchardstown, at 5.34pm on Thursday under Section 10 (2).

Sgt Ryan charged Clejan, who is originally from Romania, with the murder of Mr llyas at 5.52pm and he made no reply after caution. An application for legal aid was granted to solicitor Richard Young who requested a Romanian interpreter be assigned for his client. Clejan did not address the court during the hearing.
Due to the nature of the charge the District Court cannot consider a bail application which can only be heard in the High Court. Judge David McHugh remanded both accused in custody to appear before Cloverhill District Court on January 13 via video link.
Relatives of the accused men as well as the victim were in attendance at court. Two other men, one in his 50s and one in his late teens, who were arrested on Tuesday, December 13, 2022, were released without charge and files are being prepared for the Director of Prosecutions.
