Beledweyne (HOL) - Ali Osman, Hiiraan State president and public defence forces commander, has reported success during a major offensive against Al-Shabaab in the Hiiraan region. The operation, spanning several areas along the Shabelle River.

Ali Jeyte, who had earlier warned about the growing threat posed by Al-Shabaab, reported that the recent efforts were focused on multiple areas along the Shabelle River and aimed to counter the militant group's influence.

"Our forces have been strategically positioned in the forest area for some days, preparing to counter the enemy. The operations, stretching from yesterday to today, are among the most intense we have undertaken. Various groups, notably the Ma'wisley militia, have cooperated in this effort despite facing difficult conditions. The enemy has struggled to mount an effective defence, and our forces continue to pursue them vigorously. Al-Shabaab's tactics have been notably weak; they avoid direct combat and instead target vulnerable civilians when our forces are not in immediate proximity," explained Ali Jeyte.

Addressing residents in Halgan district's town square, Ali Jeyte stressed the urgency of civilian resilience against Al-Shabaab. He warned citizens to steer clear of areas under Al-Shabaab control, citing safety concerns. "We urge you to avoid Al-Shabaab strongholds. Remaining in these areas exposes you and your livestock to serious risks. In encounters with our forces in these zones, cooperation is crucial for your safety," he cautioned.

The Halgan district operations have been particularly effective, with the federal government reporting the elimination of over 60 Al-Shabaab militants. Additionally, a significant amount of the group's military hardware and positions were destroyed, marking a substantial blow to their capabilities.

Despite previous political tensions with Somalia's federal government, President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud appointed the former Hiiraan governor to spearhead the Ma'wisley fighters in the ongoing conflict against Al-Shabaab. The decision was made following a meeting in Hiiraan's Mahas district that included President Mohamud, politicians, traditional elders and lawmakers from the Hawadle community in early September. The federal government, recognizing the need to consolidate efforts against the militants, assured Ali Jeyte of direct support in the war effort. However, the commitment was reportedly contingent on an agreement to postpone discussions about the future of the Hiiraan State administration until after Al-Shabaab insurgents were expelled from the region.

Ali Jeyte Osman was elected as the interim Hiiraan State President by local communities, but the federal government did not recognize the vote.
