Security forces foil bombing attempt in Mogadishu's Bakara Market

Monday December 4, 2023

Mogadishu (HOL) - Security forces in Mogadishu apprehended a suspected man attempting to plant a mine at a business center in the Bakara Market, Somalia's largest open-air market, on Sunday.

The spokesman for the Banadir regional administration, Salah Dheere, told the media that security forces successfully arrested the man, who had brought the mine to the market in a rickshaw. The apprehension followed information obtained from CCTV cameras, which the government had ordered to be installed in every commercial center.

Dheere emphasized that security forces are actively seeking the network to which the suspect belongs, an organization to disrupt business activities in Mogadishu. He urged business people to collaborate with the government and ensure that their establishments are equipped with security cameras.

On the same day, two landmine explosions occurred in Mogadishu, resulting in casualties. The first explosions occurred on Route 30 (Jidka 30-ka), near Laba Dhagax, targeting two businesses. Subsequently, another blast occurred in the Bakahara market.

Security analysis suggests a connection between the two blasts and the presence of CCTV cameras. Security officials have mandated the business community to install cameras, a directive that al-Shabab has immediately opposed. The militant group has issued warnings to shop owners against cooperating with government security forces.
