New York (HOL) - The Somali government has announced in New York that it intends to open diplomatic offices in Morocco.
"Somalia has decided to open an embassy in Rabat and a Consulate General in Dakhla," said Abshir Omar Jama Huruse, Somalia's Minister of Foreign Affairs.
The announcement came after a meeting on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly between the minister and his Moroccan counterpart, Nasser Bourita.Bourita last met with Somali officials in April at an event in Dakhla, a city in Western Sahara's disputed territory.
Omar Hiraale, Ambassador and Permanent Representative of the Government of Morocco to the United Nations, attended the meeting.
Huruse stated that the two countries would sign a formal cooperation plan, paving the way for the new diplomatic mission.
In 2019, the two countries signed three memorandums of understanding concerning the construction of a political consultation facility, cooperation in diplomat training, and the formation of the Morocco-Somalia High Joint Committee, which the respective foreign ministers will co-chair,
