Ikran Tahlil's mother says President and PM silent after taking office, calls on leaders to investigate case

Mogadishu (HOL) - Qali Mohamud Guhad, the mother of a missing National Intelligence Security Agency [NISA] agent, Ikraan Tahliil, asked the Somali President and Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre to investigate her daughter's case

Speaking to Universal Somali Television on Thursday, the mother reiterated her belief that the previous government directly interfered and obstructed the investigation.

Ms. Guhad said she was disappointed that the federal government had not discussed Ikran's case since its formation. She added that she was compelled to speak out in light of the silence from the president, the prime minister and their allies, especially after they had politicized her daughter's case during the elections.

"President Mohamud, you campaigned yesterday for Ikran and everyone else seeking justice. I have expected justice to arrive, but it did not happen, so I want you to expedite the court proceedings and deal with my daughter's case," she added.

Ikraan Tahlil went missing on June 26 after her family said she received a call from her superiors to report to the NISA HQ. She was last seen entering the back of a vehicle near her home.

Around the time of her disappearance, former senior intelligence officers believed that she may have been targeted for being in possession of a list of Somali recruits clandestinely sent to Eritrea by NISA for military training.

Somalia's intelligence agency announced that she "fallen into the hands of Al-Shabaab" two months after she went missing without providing definitive proof. Al Shabaab, which claimed the assassinations of hundreds of security and government officials during its decade-long insurgency against Somalia's internationally-backed government, denied the accusation

Ikran's case created a political firestorm between former PM Roble and President Mohamud.

Roble met with Ikran's parents, who do not believe Al Shabaab killed their daughter, on multiple occasions and promised to deliver them justice.

PM Roble eventually fired Fahad Yasin, Farmajo's closest political ally, from the head of NISA, a move which the president promptly rejected and quickly created fractures within the federal government's leadership.

Fahad Yasin's replacement, Yasin Farey, told SMS Somali TV in June that Tahlil was murdered by Al-Shabaab and claimed an "intensive investigation" was conducted by NISA, which backed the claim. The alleged report has never been made public.
