Mogadishu (HOL) - Prime Minister Hamse Abdi Barre presided over the weekly meeting of the Council of Ministers on Thursday, which discussed strengthening security plans, the drought response acceleration and the debt program relief process in Somalia.
During the meeting, the Minister of Internal Security presented a report on the latest security operations of the government forces and the stabilization of the areas liberated from the al Shabaab insurgency.
The Cabinet Ministers praised clans' courage and mobilization efforts against al-Shabaab militants, adding that liberating Al-Shabaab-controlled areas is a government priority.
The council commended security forces for supporting anti-al-Shabaab militia in the fight against al-Shabaab.
Government forces, alongside anti-al Shabaab militia and al Shabaab, have been taking place in several parts of the Hiiraan and Galgadud region over the last month. The militants burnt several small settlements and destroyed communication towers.
Last Friday, al-Shabab fighters killed at least 19 civilians and destroyed trucks laden with food aid in a night attack near Mahas district in the Hiiraan region. The trucks were transporting food supplies from Baladweyne city to Mahas town.
Destroying wells and other vital civilian infrastructure has been a feature of Al Shabaab rule in rural areas, mainly as the group retreats further into the hinterlands during offensives.
