Disabled war veterans and their families receive aid in Mogadishu

Saturday October 15, 2022

Mogadishu (HOL) - The Somali Disaster Management Agency (SoDMA) distributed food supplies to former disabled Somali military veterans in Martini hospital in Mogadishu on Friday.

Speaking to the media, the director of the aid department of the Somali Disaster Management Agency (SoDMA) underlined that the aid handed over to the Hamarweyne district commissioner consisted of 200 cartons of food aid to be distributed at the Martini hospital for disabled war veterans.

"The disabled war veterans are neglected here; they don't have good access to healthcare and support. I call on the government to take special care of these people," she added.

Hamarweyne district commissioner, Dahir Mohamed, said disabled war veterans hadn't received aid in a long time, and the soldiers and their children required foot rations which have become less frequent since the onset of the drought.

Nearly 7.8 million people in Somalia have been affected by the worst drought experienced by the country in over 40 years.

The food aid distributed to the disabled war veterans coincided with the fiifth anniversary of the October 14 bombing, which claimed almost 600 victims. A monument commemorates the bombing location, and the intersection is now known as the October 14 junction commemorating the victims.
