UN delegation meets Deputy Prime Minister in Mogadishu

Wednesday October 12, 2022

Mogadishu (HOL) - Somalia’s Deputy Prime Minister Salah Jama met with a delegation from the United Nations led by the United Nations Deputy Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Somalia, Adam Abdelmoula, in Mogadishu on Wednesday.

Deputy Prime Minister and the delegation discussed accelerating efforts to assist drought-stricken people and other relief activities, as well as strengthening cooperation between the Somali government and the United Nations in the areas of development and humanitarian assistance.

United Nations Deputy Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Somalia, Adam Abdelmoula, has noted that they will continue and speed up humanitarian and drought relief activities with the help of government agencies.

Nearly 7.8 million people in Somalia have been affected by the worst drought experienced by the country in over 40 years.

Currently, over 1.1 million people are displaced, and by the end of this year, approximately 6.7 million people across Somalia are expected to face high levels of acute food insecurity.

Baidoa and Burhakaba districts in the Bay region of southwest Somalia are likely to enter a state of famine later this year as the country battles an unrelenting drought and flare-ups of conflict, the UN humanitarian chief warned last month.
