PM Barre instructs DGs to monitor for ghost civil servants

Sunday December 25, 2022

Mogadishu (HOL) - Somali Prime Minister Hamsa Abdi Barre has told the Director-Generals (DG) of the federal ministries to ensure their staff are fulfilling their obligations by adhering to the government's working hours.

During the meeting, he also directed that every DG conduct regular inspections of the civil servants in their respective ministries and immediately report employees who fall short.

"It is not appropriate for someone to receive $700 while sleeping in America, Europe, or Africa, or just being at home (away from the office), while a young guy receives $200 to battle the Khawraij, where he may be injured and his children orphaned.  It's not conceivable; how will we stand before our Lord on the Day of Judgment?"

The PM also urged the directors to begin the work day early so that government could serve the Somali citizens at the most convenient time.

"The cabinet has been authorized to implement the six-pillar program presented to the parliament and the subsequent commitment we signed with the ministers."

The PM's comments come a day after President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, speaking after Friday prayers at a mosque inside the Villa Somalia, revealed that only 1,500 out of the 5,000 permanent civil servants registered by the federal government employees have been showing up for work consistently.
