Mogadishu (HOL) - Authorities from the breakaway region of Somaliland have denied reports that they invited leaders of the federal government of Somalia to attend the funeral of Somalia's most famous poet Mohamed Ibrahim Warsame Hadrawi, who passed away in Hargeisa on Thursday.
Somaliland's Ministry of Internal Affairs said in a statement on Thursday night that he did not extend a formal invitation to Somalia's federal government leaders, and the media misunderstood his previous message.
"The media misinterpreted the Minister's statement, falsely believing that he allowed Somali federal leaders to attend the funeral," the ministry said.
When asked directly if the government of Somaliland would allow Somali federal leaders to attend Hadrawi's funeral, Minister Kahin replied, "we welcome, we grant permission, and we also thank them."
The minister added that because all Somalis adored Hadrawi, anyone requesting to attend his funeral in Somaliland would be granted permission.
Somalia's most well-known poet, Mohamed Ibrahim Warsame Hadrawi, passed away in Hargeisa on Thursday. He was 79 years old.
