Mogadishu (HOL) - At least four soldiers were killed Thursday following a deadly clash with suspected armed militias in Wanlaweyn town.
Sources said fighting broke out Thursday morning after armed men ambushed soldiers from South-West state army at a checkpoint in Wanlaweyn located in Lower Shabelle region.
The fighting lasted for about an hour before the militias fled, sources said leaving four soldiers dead.
There was no immediate comment from local authorities.
The fighting follows a series of attacks on Somali National Army bases in the Lower Shabelle region which has claimed tens lives.
US ambassador to Somalia Donald Yamamoto warned Tuesday the militant group Al-Shabaab was repositioning itself to launch attacks as the country headed for elections.
He was speaking during the just concluded Somalia Partnership Forum in Mogadishu.
