UN says floods affected over 630,000 people in Somalia

Beledweyne (HOL) - Over 630,000 people have been affected by floods after Shabelle and Jubba rivers breached their banks, according to aid officials.

Torrential rains in Central and South of Somalia have also displaced over 215,000 people.

In a statement, The Office for Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs  (OCHA) said $16 million USD is urgently required to avert the humanitarian crisis.

According to the agency, Somalia humanitarian Response was standing at $1.5 billion prior to the floods.

The agency said Baidoa and Beledweyne in central Somalia were among worst-hit districts.

Somali President, Mohamed Abdullahi Farmajo who visited Beledweyne town this week described the situation as a national disaster and appealed for international assistance.

The government appointed 22-member flood Respond Committee who will assess the situation of flood-hit areas in the country.a
