Calgary shooting: Police question suspect in Abdullahi Ahmed's New Year's Day death

Calgary police say they have a suspect in custody in the New Year's Day shooting of 27-year-old Abdullahi Ahmed.

Ahmed, a Somali-Canadian, was killed when shots rang out at a party with more than 50 people in attendance in the southwest Calgary community of Killarney. Officers responded in the 1900 block of 36 Street S.W. just after 5 a.m. MT on Jan. 1.

Six others were injured, including one person who was just driving past the residence.

"A man was taken into custody from a home in southwest Calgary," said police in Thursday night's release. "Investigators are currently interviewing the suspect. It is believed he was an invited guest to the party."

Police are thanking witnesses at the New Year's Eve party for coming forward to help with the investigation. Toronto and Edmonton police were also brought in to provide information and background on guests believed to have been at the party.

The investigation is still ongoing, and police encourage anyone with information to contact police at 403-266-1234 or Calgary Crime Stoppers.

Less than 24 hours after the New Year's shooting, another young Somali-Canadian named Murat Omar was found dead in an alley in northwest Calgary. Police discovered the 23-year-old's body after responding to reports of gunfire.

Calgary police say the two incidents are both believed to be targeted attacks, but they do not believe they are connected.
