The world is ready to help people in the freed regions, says Somali president

Somali President Hassan Sheik Mahmoud said that the international community was fully prepared to reach the formerly AL Shabab-held regions who are in need of an emergence food aid and other humanitarian assistance.

President Hassan made the statement after holding a lengthy meeting with the United Nations special envoy for Somalia Nicholas Kay and other members from the international community at the presidential palace on Wednesday.

“I praise the role by the Turkish and the United Arab Emirates Red Crescent societies for their continued assistances to the Somali people” President Hassan Sheik Mahmoud said.

“We must show the people that the international community did not forget them—the world is now ready to send humanitarian assistance to the people living in the recently recaptured regions from Al Shabab” the president noted.

The president briefed the international delegates about the conditions and the security situations of towns and cities who fell into the hands of Somali government.

The United Nations special envoy to Somalia Nicholas Kay told the meeting that the world body will donate 3 million dollars to the ministry of interior and federalism to use for the stabilisation projects.

“On behalf of the UN, I congratulate the Somali government forces and the African Union peacekeepers on their recent successful operations.” the UN envoy said adding that the operations were the most successful since the AU peacekeeping mission began in Somalia in 2007.

Somalia was represented in the high level meeting by President Hassan Sheik Mahmoud and the minister for justice and constitutional affairs Farah Sheik Abdulkader while the international community members who attended the meeting include: the UN envoy Nicholas Kay, The African Union, the European Union, United Kingdom, Sweden and Norway.
