Somali government condemns cleric assassination attempt

The Somali government denounces the recent assassination attempt on prominent Somali cleric Sheikh Bashir Ahmed Salad, Information Minister Abdullahi Ilmoge Hirsi said at a press conference Tuesday (April 9th).

"We condemn in our highest terms the assassination attempts against Somali Islamic scholars as we are against killing of innocent people," Hirsi said, according to Somalia's RBC Radio.

Hirsi said the government would intensify security measures to protect scholars from attacks by militants.

A bomb exploded in Salad's car on Monday, but no one was harmed. Salad accused al-Shabaab of being behind the attack, but no group has taken responsibility.
