Former Prime Minister accuses Somali government forces of firing on Dayniile protesters

Mogadishu (HOL) — Former Somali Prime Minister Hassan Ali Khaire on Sunday accused government forces of opening fire on peaceful protesters in Mogadishu’s Dayniile district, saying one person was killed and others were wounded.

Khaire told reporters that civilians had gathered in Dayniile to protest forced evictions and displacement when security forces fired on them. He offered condolences to the family of the person he said was killed and wished a recovery for those injured.

The reported shooting came as tensions escalated in the capital over opposition-led demonstrations against demolitions, land disputes and displacement. Dayniile was among the areas where thousands of residents gathered Sunday to protest government-backed eviction operations.

Khaire accused President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud’s administration of using force against opposition leaders, politicians and civilians. He said the movements of several opposition figures had been restricted as security forces tightened control over parts of Mogadishu.

He described the situation as “unfair” and “irresponsible,” saying the opposition supported peace, stability and respect for Somalia’s constitution and laws.

The protest dispute has become a major political flashpoint between the federal government and opposition leaders. Opposition figures say demonstrations should be allowed across Banadir region, especially in neighborhoods affected by demolitions and forced evictions.

Federal and Banadir regional authorities have said protests should be limited to designated venues to protect public order and prevent disruption in the capital.

Security was tightened Sunday in several Mogadishu districts, with restrictions reported on public movement as opposition supporters gathered in Dayniile and other areas.
