Garowe (HOL) — Puntland authorities issued new security directives Wednesday aimed at restricting armed political activity, unauthorized meetings and actions they say threaten stability in the region.
In a statement, the Puntland Ministry of Security said the measures were approved after a meeting of the security committee and ministries responsible for security affairs.
Puntland also banned meetings organized by groups it described as militias or unauthorized organizations within areas under its control.
The ministry warned that anyone who participates in or hosts such meetings would be held accountable.
The statement also said federal government officials accused of working with organizations against Puntland would not be allowed to reside freely in Puntland-controlled areas.
Security forces were instructed to act against anyone suspected of inciting violence, unrest or other activities that could disrupt public security and stability.
Puntland also warned Somalia’s federal government to stop what it described as interference in Puntland’s internal affairs, particularly any support or facilitation of armed activity in the region.
The statement comes amid growing political disputes and security tensions in parts of Puntland, including disagreements between Puntland authorities and the Federal Government of Somalia.
In recent weeks, Puntland has tightened security measures and accused federal authorities of fueling instability, while Mogadishu has not publicly responded in detail to the latest directives.
