Mogadishu (HOL) — Somalia’s National Intelligence and Security Agency said Saturday that eight al-Shabab members, including senior figures, were killed in a planned operation on the outskirts of Basra in Middle Shabelle region.
In a statement, NISA said the operation targeted a meeting site used by the group along the riverbank near Basra.
Six other members of Daqare’s team were also killed, NISA said.
The agency described the operation as a major blow to an al-Shabab network responsible for planning and carrying out mortar attacks.
“Intelligence information confirmed that the group removed the bodies of the leaders killed from the operation site and secretly buried them in another area,” NISA said.
The agency said the operation was part of ongoing efforts to weaken al-Shabab and dismantle networks involved in planning attacks.
NISA also appealed to the public to share information about security threats or activities linked to al-Shabab and ISIS through numbers previously provided by the agency.
Al-Shabab has not publicly commented on the government’s claims.
