Mogadishu (HOL) — At least one person was killed and nearly 10 others were reportedly injured in clashes between government forces and civilians protesting the demolition of homes in the Tokiyo neighborhood of Mogadishu on Sunday.
Residents staged a protest after they were told to leave land that the government claims belongs to the state.
Images circulating on social media showed injured young men being admitted to hospitals in Mogadishu.
Official figures on the number of deaths and injuries were not immediately available.
The protests also disrupted traffic in parts of Yaqshid, as burning tires blocked several roads. The clashes caused fear and anxiety among residents living in neighborhoods near the site of the violence.
The incident comes as Mogadishu undergoes reconstruction and redevelopment projects, with authorities moving to clear land that the government says is needed for public development.
However, residents in some neighborhoods being demolished say they have legal documents proving ownership of their homes, while others have told the media that the land does not belong to the government. Opposition groups have also accused the government of illegally auctioning public land to businesspeople.
The Banadir regional administration and the federal government had not immediately issued detailed statements on the Sunday’s clashes, the extent of the damage or responsibility for the reported deaths and injuries.
