Hargeisa (HOL) — Two clans from Somaliland's Awdal and Salal regions have signed a peace agreement aimed at ending months of inter-clan conflict, concluding a three-day reconciliation conference in Geerisa on Wednesday.
The SAMAWADE Peace Conference brought together government officials, traditional elders, religious leaders, military commanders and representatives of the two communities to negotiate an end to the violence and lay the groundwork for lasting peace.
The conference was chaired by Somaliland Interior and Security Minister Abdalle Mohamed Arab and attended by members of the Council of Ministers, the peace committee of the House of Elders (Guurti), regional officials from Awdal, Salal and Saaxil, military officers, religious scholars and community elders.
Announcing the outcome of the talks, the House of Elders' peace committee said both sides had committed themselves to ending all acts of violence and working together to preserve stability in the region.
As part of the agreement, 62 traditional elders representing the two communities were sworn in and pledged to oversee implementation of the accord and help prevent future clashes.
"The two communities have agreed to end the conflict immediately, strengthen peace and ensure that anyone who threatens stability is held accountable under the law," the committee said.
Interior Minister Abdalle Mohamed Arab welcomed the agreement and said the Somaliland government would ensure its full implementation.
"The government will enforce every provision of this agreement, and strict legal action will be taken against anyone who violates it or attempts to undermine peace," he said.
Traditional elders from both communities also welcomed the accord, pledging to work together to maintain peace, rebuild trust and promote social cohesion after the conflict.
Officials described the agreement as an important step toward restoring stability in western Somaliland and strengthening peaceful coexistence between communities in Awdal and Salal.
