By Eng. Maashan Abdulkadir Jawari
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful, I begin by praising Allah, the omniscient, all-knowing, and gracious.
In the annals of Greater Somali history, few names resonate with the profound gravitas and unwavering integrity of former President, Minister, and Speaker, Mohamed Osman Jawari. To the world, he was a distinguished statesman, a revered speaker of parliament, and the architect of Somalia’s fragile democracy and constitution. To us, he was an uncle, father, grandfather, mentor, and a moral compass whose influence shaped our paths and guided our hearts.
Adeerow Mohamed’s life was a testament to the power of knowledge and the unwavering pursuit of justice. His intellectual acumen, refined through over five decades of dedicated public service, was evident in every decision he made.
From an early age, Adeerow Mohamed’s life was marked by an insatiable quest for both religious and worldly knowledge, as well as an unyielding commitment to justice. His intellectual prowess, nurtured through rigorous education and refined by years of public service, was evident in every discourse and decision he undertook. His ability to navigate the treacherous waters of Somali politics with integrity and resolve made him a figurehead in the national reconciliation process during the onset of Somalia’s Civil War in 1991, a role he embraced with humility and a deep sense of duty. He was an architect of Somalia’s current and previous democratic institutions, policies, laws, and constitution, advocating for Somali unity with unwavering integrity.
As we reflect on his legacy, we say: Inna lillahi wa inna ilayhi raji'un (Indeed, to Allah we belong, and to Him we shall return), drawing comfort from the knowledge that his life was one of service to Allah and humanity. His role as a mentor in our family extended beyond the imparting of knowledge; it was the nurturing of values—patience, perseverance, and a deep sense of duty to others—that has left an indelible mark on our lives.
During his last position held in office, as the Speaker of the Somali Parliament, he was characterized by his commitment to parliamentary integrity and the rule of law. His leadership was instrumental in navigating Somalia through some of its most critical periods. He played a key role in drafting the legislative frameworks that paved the way for Somalia’s fragile peace, always ensuring that his actions reflected the teachings of the Qur'an and the Sunnah. Although he encountered tumultuous challenges during his tenure, he remained steadfast and committed to the greater good of the nation—a testament to his deep faith in Allah's justice.
Yet, outside the political arena and public eye, it was his personal virtues—his kindness, humility, and unwavering moral compass—that endeared him to all who knew him. He was a man of few words, yet each utterance carried the weight of experience and the light of foresight. Even in the corridors of power, he remained grounded, always approachable, and committed to the betterment of his people. His actions reflected the Hadith of our beloved Prophet Mohamed (SAW): “The best among you are those who have the best manners and character.”
As we remember Professor Mohamed Osman Jawari, we do so with hearts full of gratitude. His life was a beacon of hope for a nation and a guiding light for our family. His legacy, both public and personal, will continue to inspire us to strive for the ideals he held dear: justice, integrity, and an unwavering dedication to the greater good of humanity. In our moments of reflection, we find solace in the knowledge that his spirit endures in the lives he touched and the paths he illuminated.
Farewell, dear uncle, mentor, and leader. Your legacy will forever be etched in our hearts and in the history of the land you loved and served so diligently. We ask Allah, the Most Compassionate, to grant you Jannat al-Firdaus. May your grave be spacious, filled with light, and may your good deeds be a source of ongoing rewards in the Hereafter. We pray that Allah forgives your shortcomings and accepts your lifetime of service as a testament to your faith.
Allahumma Ameen.
