Belgrade, Serbia (HOL) — Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud attended the 65th-anniversary commemorative summit of the Non-Aligned Movement, which opened Tuesday in Belgrade, Serbia.
Speaking at the summit, Hassan Sheikh addressed global security, political and economic challenges and stressed the importance of stronger international cooperation.
The president also presented Somalia’s progress and the federal government’s efforts to strengthen stability, reconstruction and national development.
He thanked the international community for its continued support for Somalia.
Hassan Sheikh reaffirmed Somalia’s commitment to the principles of the Non-Aligned Movement, particularly respect for sovereignty and territorial integrity, justice, equality and the peaceful resolution of disputes.
The summit is being held under the theme “The Legacy of Non-Alignment: Lessons for Today’s World.”
Discussions are expected to focus on sovereign equality, non-interference and trade cooperation among developing nations.
The Non-Aligned Movement held its first conference in Belgrade in 1961, bringing together countries seeking to remain independent from major Cold War power blocs.
