Somalia prepares Ebola prevention plan after regional outbreak alerts

Mogadishu (HOL) — Somalia has prepared a national Ebola prevention plan and raised its health alert level after reports of the virus in some African countries, officials said Monday.

The Ministry of Health said no Ebola case has been confirmed in Somalia. But officials said preparedness has been strengthened because of regular movement of people and flights from neighboring countries, especially Uganda and Kenya.

“The Ministry of Health confirms that no case of Ebola has been registered in the country so far. However, preparedness and close cooperation are essential,” the government said in a statement.

The announcement followed a high-level meeting at the National Center for Public Health Emergency Operations in Mogadishu. Officials from the ministries of health, internal security, foreign affairs, civil aviation and information attended, along with representatives from the Somali Disaster Management Agency.

The meeting focused on improving coordination among government institutions, strengthening national preparedness and preventing a possible outbreak.

Officials agreed to rapidly deploy a health emergency management team and increase health screening at entry points, including airports and border crossings.

The government also designated Martini Hospital in Mogadishu as the national center for assessing and testing suspected Ebola cases.

Authorities said public awareness campaigns would be expanded and urged citizens to follow health guidance issued by official agencies.

The government said it would closely monitor the movement of troops and support personnel from international missions, including UNSOM and the African Union Support and Stabilization Mission in Somalia, AUSSOM. Officials said all such movements would be coordinated with national health services.

The Ministry of Health also warned the media and the public against spreading unverified information, saying health updates should be obtained only from official sources.

The ministry called on all government agencies to work together to protect public safety and prevent Ebola from reaching Somalia.
