Mogadishu (HOL) — Somalia’s Supreme Court has ratified the results of Southwest State’s House of Representatives elections, confirming the electoral commission’s figures after reviewing complaints and submissions related to the vote.
The court said on Monday it examined complaints over the electoral process, written objections and reports submitted by the National Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission before ruling that the results complied with Somali law and should be officially recognized.
According to the court document, 132,430 voters took part in the Southwest State elections. Of those, 128,276 ballots were validated and 4,154 were rejected. The court also confirmed that 298 ballot boxes were used in the vote.
In the House of Representatives contest, 95 seats were contested by 32 political organizations.
The Justice and Unity Party JSP won the largest share of the vote, receiving 67,970 ballots, or 53% of valid votes, and securing 51 seats.
Horumar iyo Midnimo Qaran came second with 18,667 votes and 14 seats, followed by Karaamo with 14,708 votes and 11 seats.
Sincad won six seats, while Tawfiq secured four. Several smaller parties, including Waabari, Madalsan, Muwadiniinta Soomaaliyeed, Saab, Ramaas and Dhalinyarada Talo Qaran, each won one seat.
The ruling clears the way for the next stage of Southwest State’s political process, including the swearing-in of elected lawmakers and the formation of the House leadership.
The Southwest elections have become part of a broader national dispute over Somalia’s transition toward one-person, one-vote elections. Federal officials say the process expands public participation, while opposition leaders have accused the government of pushing ahead without broad political consensus.
