Somali region launches nearly million water project in Qabridaharre town

Jigjiga (HOL) — Ethiopia’s Somali Regional Government on Sunday laid the foundation stone for a 407 million birr water purification plant in Qabridaharre, a project that will expand access to clean water in a town long affected by shortages and poor water quality.

Somali Regional State President Mustafa Muhumed Omar and Water Affairs Minister Ahmed Miraad Layli launched the project at a ceremony attended by local and district officials.

The new plant is expected to provide clean, treated water to Qabridaharre and nearby communities, where many residents have relied for years on brackish water with high mineral content. Local officials said the project is intended to reduce waterborne health problems and improve basic services for both residents and livestock.

Mustafa said his administration had made social service development a priority, including water, health, education, roads and urban infrastructure. He said the Qabridaharre project was part of a broader regional plan to improve living conditions and expand essential services.

Residents welcomed the project, saying clean water has been one of the town’s most persistent challenges. Many said they hoped the purification plant would end years of dependence on untreated water that has affected people and animals.

Officials said the project reflects the regional government’s wider investment in basic services as demand for clean water continues to grow across the Somali region.
