Jigjiga (HOL) — Ethiopia’s Somali Regional State has officially launched campaigning for its seventh regional and national elections, with large rallies held Saturday in several towns and districts in support of ruling Barwaqo Party candidates.
Thousands of supporters gathered in public squares across the region, waving flags and banners as party candidates began campaigning for local and federal parliamentary seats.
“Yesterday we won; the Barwaqo Party won, and the people won. Tomorrow we will win, so vote for the party,” Mustafa told supporters in Dhagaxbuur.
The campaign launch marks the start of a politically important period in the Somali Regional State, where the ruling party is seeking to consolidate support across urban centers, border districts and rural communities.
In Feerfeer district in the Shabelle region, supporters gathered for a large rally backing Barwaqo Party candidates running for local and federal seats. Party supporters displayed campaign banners and pledged support for the candidates.
In Qorraxay region, the campaign was launched in Shilaabo district, where Barwaqo Party candidates addressed residents and outlined development plans. The candidates called on the public to take part in the election and support the party’s agenda.
Another major rally was held in Godey, one of the main towns in the Shabelle region, where residents turned out in support of Barwaqo Party candidates.
Campaign activities also continued in Daawa region, where Barwaqo Party candidates toured several districts, including Moyale, Ley and Qadadumo, before arriving in Mubarak district.
In Mubarak, the candidates were welcomed by local residents, party supporters and senior regional officials. The reception was attended by the deputy speaker of the regional House of Representatives, ministers and other administration officials.
Residents met the candidates on the outskirts of Mubarak before escorting them into the district, where party officials held campaign events with members of the community.
The Barwaqo Party is expected to continue holding rallies across the Somali Regional State as candidates seek support ahead of the vote.
