President Mohamud hosts Iftar with political leaders after talks collapse

Mogadishu (HOL) — Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud hosted an iftar meeting at the Presidential Palace with leaders of the country’s political organizations, days after high-level talks with the opposition-aligned Somali Future Council collapsed without agreement.

The meeting focused on the political situation and efforts to strengthen Somalia’s evolving democratic process. According to a statement from Villa Somalia, the gathering provided a forum for open dialogue on electoral reforms and expanding inclusive political participation.

During the discussions, President Hassan Sheikh listened to proposals from political leaders on improving the electoral system and ensuring wider citizen engagement.

He urged political stakeholders to enhance cooperation and take part in the government’s planned transition toward one-person, one-vote elections across Somalia’s regions.

The president reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to building a democratic framework based on transparency, inclusivity and the expressed will of the Somali people.

Leaders of the political organizations, for their part, emphasized the importance of unity, consultation and maintaining political stability to safeguard governance and ensure a credible electoral process.

The meeting was attended by Deputy Prime Minister Saleh Ahmed Jama; Minister of Interior, Federal Affairs and Reconciliation Ali Yusuf Ali Hosh; Minister of Justice and Constitutional Affairs Hassan Moalim Mohamud; and Director General of the Presidency Abdikarim Mohamed Yusuf.
