Las Anod (HOL) — Somalia’s Northeastern State parliament has issued a resolution calling for the prosecution of officers and personnel arrested during the Gooja Adde fighting who are accused of human rights violations.
A parliamentary document dated July 26, 2026, said the decision was reached during a regular session of lawmakers and was based on the House’s constitutional mandate to uphold justice, the rule of law and respect for human rights.
The statement did not name the individuals to be prosecuted but called for the expedited trial of detainees held in administrative custody over alleged crimes against the Northeastern administration and its people.
Lawmakers also stressed that any trials should be fair and transparent, and that all legal rights granted to the accused should be respected throughout the judicial process.
Somaliland officials and soldiers were captured during the 2023 Gooja Adde battle on the outskirts of Las Anod and have since been held in prisons in the Northeastern region.
The resolution marks the first formal step by the Northeastern House of Representatives to demand that their cases be referred to court.
It comes after Somalia’s Northeastern regional state parliament stripped six lawmakers of parliamentary immunity this month after they announced their resignations and returned to Somaliland.
