Doha (HOL) — Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud arrived in Doha on Tuesday to attend a condolence ceremony following the death of Qatar’s former emir, Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani.
Hassan Sheikh and his delegation were welcomed at Hamad International Airport by Qatar’s Minister of Transport Sheikh Mohamed bin Abdullahi bin Mohamed Al Thani and Somalia’s ambassador to Qatar, Mohamed Ahmed Sheikh Ali.
His visit comes as Qatar observes national mourning for Sheikh Hamad, who played a major role in the country’s political history and development.
Hassan Sheikh on Monday ordered Somalia’s national flag to be flown at half-mast for three days in mourning.
In a statement published by state media, the Somali presidency said the decision reflected Somalia’s solidarity with the government and people of Qatar.
The statement praised Sheikh Hamad’s role in leading Qatar and supporting the country’s development during his tenure.
Qatar has declared four days of national mourning, while leaders and delegations from several countries are expected to offer condolences to the royal family and the Qatari government.
Somalia and Qatar maintain bilateral relations based on cooperation in political, economic, development and humanitarian fields.
