Mogadishu (HOL) — Members of Somalia’s House of the People and Upper House elected from Puntland have called for President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud to step down, accusing him of violating the Constitution and undermining the federal system.
In a statement Saturday, the lawmakers said the constitutional term of the president and other federal institutions had expired and called for constitutional and legal procedures governing a political transition to be followed.
They also alleged that the federal government is interfering in Puntland’s internal affairs and fueling political and security tensions in the region.
“We condemn the use of clan militias in the Somali National Army, which is damaging the credibility of security institutions,” the lawmakers said.
The MPs called on Somali citizens, political leaders and civil society groups to defend the Constitution, preserve peace and protect national unity.
They also urged all sides to avoid actions that could lead to political chaos or further instability.
The lawmakers called on the international community to closely monitor Somalia’s political situation, particularly around what they described as the end of the president’s constitutional term.
The statement comes amid a deepening political impasse between Puntland and the Federal Government of Somalia, with both sides trading accusations over security, federal authority and the country’s political direction.
