Somalia elected to African Union Peace and Security Council for 2026–2028 term

Addis Ababa (HOL) — Somalia has been elected to serve as a member of the African Union Peace and Security Council for the 2026–2028 term on Wednesday, marking a significant diplomatic milestone for the country.

In a statement, Somalia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said the election reflects renewed confidence in Somalia’s role and growing contribution to Africa’s peace and security agenda.

The government expressed gratitude to African Union member states that supported its candidacy, with special acknowledgment of the backing from countries in the Eastern Africa region.

Somalia said it joins the 15-member council with a defined set of priorities: strengthening conflict prevention, advancing peacebuilding and reconciliation, enhancing counterterrorism cooperation and supporting post-conflict recovery efforts across the continent.

Drawing on its own experience of state-building, security sector reform and counterinsurgency, Somalia said it intends to bring practical insight and a principled approach to the council’s mandate.

The Peace and Security Council is the African Union’s primary decision-making body for conflict prevention, management and resolution. It oversees peace support operations, imposes sanctions when necessary and coordinates collective responses to crises across the continent.

Somalia’s election comes as the country continues to rebuild its security institutions and expand its diplomatic engagement, positioning itself as both a beneficiary of and contributor to regional stability initiatives.

The Foreign Ministry said Somalia remains committed to multilateral cooperation, African solidarity and stronger collective security mechanisms, pledging to work closely with AU partners to promote stability, peace and development across Africa.
