Egypt condemns Israel recognition of breakaway region of Somaliland: FM Abdelatty to Somali counterpart

Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty expressed on Thursday Egypt’s condemnation of Israel's recognition of the breakaway region of Somaliland as a violation of international law that infringes upon Somalia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.

During a meeting with his Somali counterpart Abdisalam Abdi Ali in Cairo, FM Abdelatty said the Israeli move undermines the foundations of stability in the Horn of Africa, warning of the dangers of escalation that could destabilize the security and stability of the Red Sea.

He stressed Egypt's firm support for Somalia’s unity, sovereignty, and territorial integrity, rejecting the establishment of any parallel entities outside globally recognized legal frameworks

The Egyptian FM renewed Cairo’s commitment to continuing support for efforts to build Somali state institutions and enhance their capacity to establish security and stability, particularly in confronting the challenges of terrorism and extremism, calling for coordinating regional and global efforts to address these phenomena.

He further affirmed Egypt’s support for global efforts aimed at achieving security, stability, and development in Somalia, stressing the importance of working with international partners to mobilize sufficient and sustainable funding for the African Union Support and Stabilization Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM), enabling it to carry out its duties as intended.

According to the Egyptian foreign ministry, the meeting also addressed several issues of mutual interest, where both ministers discussed ways to establish stability, security, and peace and achieve development in Africa.

They also touched on preparations for the session of the African Union (AU) Peace and Security Council (PSC), scheduled to be held under Egypt’s current chairmanship on developments in Somalia.

Abdelatty and Ali agreed on the importance of continuing coordination and consultation at both the bilateral and multilateral levels, especially with the upcoming AU Summit next week and Somalia’s membership on the UN Security Council, in a manner that serves the shared interests of both countries and their peoples.

He also commended the mutual keenness to develop them across economic, developmental, and investment fields, which was reflected in the relocation of the headquarters of the Egyptian embassy to the capital, Mogadishu, for the first time since 1991.

The Egyptian FM underscored the importance of continuing to enhance bilateral cooperation in security, trade, infrastructure, electricity, renewable energy, pharmaceuticals, and agricultural and food processing industries.

He also emphasised the importance of further boosting trade exchange in parallel with the imminent opening of Banque Misr’s branch in Mogadishu, which will contribute to strengthening economic partnerships between Egypt and Somalia.

For his part, the Somali FM expressed deep appreciation for Egypt’s supportive role for his country, affirming Somalia’s pride in the historic and fraternal relations with Egypt.

He also commended Egypt’s ongoing efforts to support Somalia’s unity and sovereignty and to build its national institutions, valuing the political, developmental, and capacity-building support provided by Egypt.

Ali affirmed Somalia’s aspiration to continue enhancing cooperation and coordination with Egypt across various fields in a way that contributes to achieving security, stability, and development in Somalia and the region.
