Mogadishu (HOL) — The Banadir Regional Administration has launched the first phase of a resettlement programme for families affected by the ongoing reorganization of informal settlements across Mogadishu.
During an inspection of the allocated site in Gubadley district on Monday, Mogadishu Mayor and Banadir Governor Hassan Mohamed Hussein Muungaab said 1,058 families would be resettled in the area.
Officials said the programme is intended to provide affected families with a safer and better-organized living environment.
Muungaab said the initiative would continue and expand to other districts where the administration has secured land to accommodate additional families.
The programme forms part of broader government efforts to improve urban planning and ensure that families affected by redevelopment and settlement clearances have access to suitable housing and basic services.
The launch comes days after the Union of Somali Ulema Councils called on the federal government to halt any actions that deny citizens their property rights amid growing complaints over land disputes, demolitions and forced evictions in parts of Mogadishu.
The council said it had received numerous complaints from residents who claimed to possess legal ownership documents but said their property had been challenged, seized or subjected to fees without a clear legal basis.
The clearance operations have displaced hundreds of families and triggered protests and political backlash.
Residents and government critics have accused officials of mismanaging public land and facilitating land grabs linked to private business interests.
Authorities have defended the demolitions, saying they are part of efforts to reclaim public land, clear roads and implement urban redevelopment projects.
